WHAT IS THE MEANING OF JAGAD GURU?

In today’s times, the word “guru” is often misunderstood and misused, making the true meaning of “Jagad Guru” — even more difficult for us to grasp.

A few years ago, by the grace of the Guru, I had the opportunity to attend a Vedanta workshop in Sringeri, the sacred seat of Adi Shankaracharya. During the course, we were blessed with a few occasions to be in the presence of Sannidhanam Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Mahaswamiji, the successor-designate to the present Jagadguru Shankaracharya Maha Sannidhanam Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji.

During the discourse, Maha Sannidhanam explained the true meaning of the term Jagad Guru. Swamiji shared that Jagad refers to “the world” and guru to “a spiritual guide.” Thus, Jagad Guru is one who is qualified to offer spiritual guidance to the entire world — across its vast cultural, social, economic, and psychological diversity.

Reflecting on this teaching, I came to understand that while there are many teachers and spiritual guides in the world, not all are equipped to guide everyone. Their reach and relevance often align with specific groups or individuals. Even in my own experience, I’ve noticed how certain inner conditionings draw me more naturally toward particular communities or student profiles, while with others, the connection does not arise as easily.

As long as we remain bound by our karmas and samskaras, we operate within the realm of the mind and its conditionings. It is only a tapasvī — one who has mastered both sastra (scriptural wisdom) and sadhana (disciplined practice) — who transcends the limitations of the three guṇas: sattva, rajas, and tamas. Such a being alone can truly be called a Jagad Guru — one who is fit to guide the world.

The loving compassion — karuṇa — of the Jagad Guru is ever-present. It is up to the aspirant, the sadhaka, to attune themselves and receive it with shraddha and samarpana (faith and surrender).

May we all aspire for such a anugraha (grace)!

Krishnam Vande Jagad Guru!
